Our Chief

Chief Pumphrey has been with the Taft Police Department since 1987 when he was hired as a Police Officer. He moved up through the ranks and was appointed Chief of Police in 1995. He also is the Facility Administrator for our Community Correctional Facility.

Chief Pumphrey brings a wealth of knowledge to our department. Prior to coming to Taft, Chief Pumphrey worked for the Kern County Sheriff's Department for 13 years. During his employment at the Sheriff's Department he was assigned to Delano and Lamont Substations as well as to the Bakersfield Detective Division (Burglary, Robbery / Homicide) as an Investigator and Sergeant. After promoting to Lieutenant, he served as a Watch Commander and Commander of Crimes Against Property.

He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds a P.O.S.T. Management Certificate.

Our facility is located at 320 Commerce Way. Administrative offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For routine information and assistance, contact us at 763-3101.

The Taft Police Department is a professional law enforcement organization that takes great pride in our department and the service we provide to the citizens of Taft. Our officers and civilian employees are all competent and dedicated men and women who strive to meet the service demands of our residents.

The Taft Police Department provides protection to approximately 10 square miles and 7,000 people. Our Department personnel consists of the Police Chief, 3 Sergeants and 8 Patrol Officers. In addition, there are 5 Dispatchers, 2 Community Service Officers, Animal Control Officer, Animal Shelter Technician, Administrative Secretary, 3 Reserve Officers and 11 Volunteers. These personnel provide full-time, 24-hour police coverage with a full-time dispatch center for Police, Fire and Ambulance. The department also operates a Type I Jail facility for pre-arraignment prisoners. The Police Department also administers a 460 bed Community Correctional Facility that contracts with the State of California Department of Corrections to house state inmates.
